Apparently, the unfinished apartments at the top of the complex were the problem. In Tenerife, the builder is obliged to provide electricity and water until the complex is officially finished and handed over to the community, by which time the responsibility is passed to the individual owners. Our builder had decided that he had finished all the work that he was going to do and informed the electricity company, who duly noted that nobody else had applied to take over the electricity account, and promptly pulled the plug. Everybody on the complex was affected apart from those who had found out about the need to apply for a private supply and had already had individual meters installed. Our two jovial Johns had heard about the new requirements by chance and were two of very few on the complex who had not been plunged into darkness. For want of anything better to do, they were now wandering through the complex, gloating at everybody they could find. Its a bit serious, isnt it, said John One. ‘I mean, a bar without electricity? What can you do? Become a salad bar? Aye, a salad bar. Good one, John. Salad and water warm water, mind. They both set about laughing. This was getting us nowhere apart from feeling more irritated by the two clowns. What do you suggest? I asked, interrupting their mirth.

The woman began to brush our lawn, eyeing the patio doors for signs of life. Satisfied that there was none, she climbed over the wall and continued to sweep the grass. Whats she doing? sniggered Joy. Brushing our lawn, I think. The woman bobbed her head from side to side trying to catch sight of what lay inside. She manoeuvred a little closer to the glass doors, still sweeping back and forth. Her husband remained on the other side of the wall, encouraging her to go closer.
It was Motown madness on Thursday night. Maxi Belle had recommended a soul act who, apparently, used to be in The Drifters. It was not an uncommon boast, half of the black singers who threw in the obligatory ‘On the Boardwalk into their set also made the same claim. If you believed all the claimants, the Drifters would have had more members than the London Symphony Orchestra, and that was just in Tenerife. Having seen his act, whether he was ex-anything or not, we couldnt deny that he was good. Gene Alexander had an ultra-smooth voice, dazzling footwork and was one of the most professional acts that we had seen on the island. However, he didnt come cheap, especially when he found out that hed have to travel out of town to accommodate the Smugglers into his schedule. But Gene didnt disappoint. He was a huge hit with the holidaymakers and many residents from far afield, who would make their only appearance at our bar on the Thursdays when Gene was performing. Joys theatrical aspirations were briefly fulfilled as she joined Gene in a dance routine that they had worked on for ‘Up On the Roof. It was only after a few weeks of Genes gigs that we found out he was capable of getting much higher than just the roof. One Thursday he had arrived over half an hour late and the audience were growing impatient. The two Johns were having a particularly annoying day: ‘I think your ex-Drifters an ex-Smugglers now, said John One.
